The beaver bog yesterday

Looking at the bog from near bridge Charlie on 9/28

We wandered over to the beaver bog during a somewhat Canadian forest fire cloudy day. We are in the midst of an incredibly unusual (for this year) string of rain-less days. Temperatures are 45f-65f for the most part and some sun, some clouds (natural or Canadian). The pond-lake-bog levels are high, from a combination of a rainy year and local dams being in force. Our local trails are still a bit damp despite the days of no-rain.

The foliage report is what you see. A report from the TV said our moist year has curtailed the usual sequence of leaves losing their coloring agents and extended the season for leaves doing photosynthesis. Bottom line is: get used to going from green directly to brown in many cases.

Coming up next: my report on a hike up Trout Mountain during Labor Day weekend!

Mystic visit report continued

Among several walks around the island during our recent visit, I encountered the latest groups of Canadian immigrants. Visitors at the yacht club are seen here.

The most dramatic observations belong to the invasion of the green goo on the Ice pond. Our first view showed only the south half of the pond covered with the bright slime. However, each day presented different variations. Sometimes the whole pond was covered. Other days showed only the north half covered. I can only guess the wind caused these differences.

The geese, ducks, and, even, the turtles seemed to adjust to this invasion. I even saw these creatures sampling the contaminants, or so it seemed.
