This is my world; our patrol on last Sunday was on a partly cloudy day and was about three miles total. We traversed the snowmobile trails, mostly; the blue track is our route recorded by our Topo map Navigator app. I have marked the prepped snowmobile tracks in dotted red.
We visited the several tree stands set up by hunters over the last few years. Most of these have been idle and unused this year.
The snowmobile club has fully repaired the five bridges shown (labeled A through E).
Sand Pond, upper left, is the northern extent of our patrol area. Once the pond freezes in winter, the snowmobile activity increases exponentially as the pond becomes the linkage to the northern trails beyond the pond.

Autumn woods patrol

During hunting season, we head over to the Smithfield Plantation reserve about two miles down our road.
November is when the vernal pools fill up (see image 2). The reserve has a number of them (indeed, one of the trails is named the “Vernal Pool trail”). These cyclical bodies of water are essential catalysts for innumerable forest creatures.
While most tree falls are natural, if a big tree falls across a trail, trimming is needed (see image 3).
