Into the woods on a January day

D81_0237_150110_02xAfter the start of the year, we had some sunny weekends that allowed some walking in the woods. The upper bog area, a smaller portion of the back forest and still part of the creek that empties the larger bog, is shown here. Like the big bog, it was fully forested when we first moved here. Our beaver colony turned it into the bog it is today.

As any bog, it supplies living material for numerous flora and fauna. Here, in the second and third pictures, one sees dead things mostly; dead in name only.

Last Sunday when the temperatures went above freezing for the first time in a week, I sat outside on the front steps just soaking in the sun in the afternoon. After about a half-hour, I almost went inside when I heard the tapping. I grabbed my new camera and 70-200mm lens and located the woodpecker by zeroing in on the tapping. Here he is, about thirty or forty feet way up a birch tree.
