The beaver bog gets wet

The bog now has a significant amount of water content. After twenty to twenty-five years of being mostly dry, this Spring has seen the effects of increased beaver damming over the Fall and Winter. The beavers have re-established the old dam at the start of the outlet stream (where bridge Charlie is and shown in a previous post). They have also enhanced the dams on the primary feeder stream (near bridge Echo), shown here.

It is interesting to see the higher water levels in the bog despite the damming of the feeder stream. In contrast, down at Woodbury Pond, where the bog outlet stream empties into, the water level is much lower than usual. I suspect they have opened the dam that controls the pond’s level for some reason.

Still the beginning of Spring

You may think we are proceeding slowly into Spring, based on this image from one of our garden spots. Not so fast. According to my log, we had an eight-inch snow storm on April 8 last year! This year so far, I have raked a ton of leaves from the side yard, front yard, and back yard. Today, it is above 70F! This is another example how last year was a really, really crappy year. Oh yeah, this year we have toilet paper. Go figure.

Not only daffodils but some crocuses have also popped up (not shown). I saw a robin yesterday; they are not prevalent, probably because our grounds are quite dry. Rain has been sporadic, so moisture-loving creatures, such as earth worms, are few and far between.
