Ducks in a row on Woodbury Pond

johngregsite Posted on 10-Jul-2020 by john10-Jul-2020

[update 18:36] For the second straight day, our DUCK team was on duty on Woodbury Pond (see post at johnsfstop.com). This second look was a chance encounter using a slightly different path down to the shoreline. Yesterday, we were on the snowmachine trail, which is to Image woodbury pondthe right in this image. Just like yesterday, Kayla, the new dog, and I approached in the usual way- that is  – a bit noisy. Contrary to many previous encounters, the subjects ignored us and Kayla didn’t seem bothered (last week, there was a large male loon swimming around just beyond where you see the ducks huddled up here. She wanted to swim out and meet the loon.); So, here you see 7 (seven!) ducks – they may be female mallards, one adult (mom?) and 6 kids. An eighth bird flew away just after we arrived. Update: ducks are more likely Black ducks- or the variation known as   “Mottled ducks”.

It was very hot and humid; this was about 3pm.

A coronal retirement update

July-1 marks the 107th day of my forced retirement from the world of earned income due to the hoax Trumpian Flu. We have been trying to stay distant and masked during this time. Our world consists of about 100 or so acres of Maine woods but we do venture out into the community. Of course, not as much as we would like or want to, but it does happen.

My primary projects are portrayed here: feeding the hummingbirds and growing food (primarily cherry tomatoes). Plus, our newest resident (see below), Kayla, a three-plus year old primarily German shepherd with more energy and strength than all of us put together.

The hummingbirds have started to appear regularly every fifteen minutes or so. We started with one (a male) that would appear every hour or so (back in May). Now there are three or four, perhaps two couples? If a pair of them arrive at the same time, they scream, shout, and fly at each other menacingly.

Kayla and I have started obedience training at PetSmart. It is six sessions, once a week. She is usually very good but needs to get used to her new surroundings and the cats.
