Squirrel point light station

The Squirrel Point light dates from 1898 when a set of navigation structures were put into service along the southern stretch of the Kennebec river in central coastal Maine. Previous posts highlighted several others that we passed during our journey down and up the river last month.

This site has the boathouse (building to the left) remaining. While the light is still operating, the keeper’s residence and boathouse are now national historic places. Local voluntary groups struggle to maintain them.

The station dates from 1898 and the light is still an official aid to navigation. The light’s operation was automated in 1959 and the light keeper dismissed. The lighthouse keeper’s house has been restored by a non-profit local association. A boathouse on the site originally has disappeared with the ages.
