Mid-coast cruise
From this past week’s Boothbay harbor cruise, we noted numerous osprey and heron sightings, more than what we remember seeing in the past; of course, gulls, cormorants, and terns were also in abundance, as usual. We did not see any seals, which is unusual. Another surprise was the large number of lobster pot buoys, seems like many more than usual. This year’s lobster landings have been at record number, driving wholesale prices to record lows. We surmise the low prices are causing the lobstermen (maybe even the lobsterwomen, too) to put out more pots in an attempt to maintain total revenue.
Near Robinson’s on Southport island, a few lobster pots were not in the water as we passed by (2nd image).
