January thaw

johngregsite Posted on 13-Jan-2018 by john31-Mar-2018

Image C158B389-E4C0-4E0B-ADB6-F2B97689267FAfter snow storms that added feet to our snow cover, we got the usual January thaw one week earlier than usual. Temperatures went to 50f over night and we got about two inches of rain. Here is bridge bravo on the local trail. It is inundated with water, which is ironic since this area was bone-dry last August. The stream proceeds from the bridge under our local road and the culvert has a steady outflow on the other side of the road, see second image.

The height of snow banks has been greatly reduced with the combined thawing and rain. The mailbox was barely above a four foot wall of ice and snow; it now has a foot at most lying at its base.

We have not been able to venture into the back woods since late December. We did one minor patrol using snowshoes last weekend. We will be able to get out on the trails tomorrow and probably will not need snow shoes but crampons are a possibility. Temperatures are forecast to go back to zero overnight.

Old to new year weekend

image D81_8321_zOur annual visit to Mystic at year end / new year was COLD this year! The sun still sets over the Mystic River and Morgan Point in Noank on the last and first days of the year.

We have exclusive images of ice and bergs from the yacht club to the little beach. On our late afternoon walk to the little beach, we found plenty of sea ice at higher tide. The ice departs during low tide.

On one morning walk over to the yacht club, we got more views of ice covered shore lines. We did not venture over to Enders Island due to the cold and wind (Murphy would have gone but two-pairs of gloves couldn’t keep my hands warm). Looking east toward the east end of Fishers Island Sound and Latimer light revealed wispy sea smoke on the horizon. Ducks floated along the coastline here instead of their usual venue of the ice pond (it was frozen solid).

We did walk all the way to Mason Point at the end of Nauyaug Point road. Testing the ice at the ice pond causeway (so called) found it solid. Later we found two young men clearing snow off the center of the pond in preparation for ice skating (this was at the end of Ice Pond Lane).

How cold was it? A large group of mallards encamped under Thom’s outer bird feeder to eat seeds? acorns?
