Bog recon

johngregsite Posted on 7-Dec-2015 by john6-Dec-2015

D81_2383z_151206The latest view of the beaver den on the farthest bog. I was about ten-fifteen feet away, standing on the old rail trail, which is shown in image 2, below. The beavers have managed to dam up their reservoir bog using the berm that makes up the rail trail. The rail trail itself is pock marked with puddles as a result of damage done by ATV machines.

In image 2, you can see where the beavers have reinforced the higher parts of the trail with their own damming (the reservoir is on the left in image 2).

The water level of the bog is now over two feet higher than the water on the rail trail. The trail is about two feet or more higher than the woodland on the right of the trail.

With the rail trail also existing as the local snow mobile trail, it will be interesting to see how the beavers cope with the noise and traffic that will occur this winter.

Deer meet

johngregsite Posted on 5-Dec-2015 by john5-Dec-2015

D81_2332_151129_181Last Sunday, we were on patrol to the new beaver home on the farthest bog. As we proceeded along the old railway trail and approached the area just before “the field,” we spotted a white tail deer in the near wood on the left.

This deer did not want to leave the area. Contrary to almost all our other encounters in the past, this deer did not bolt. She stood her ground and provided a number of shots like the one you see at left. She was motionless for several minutes as I secured Murphy to a tree and started to creep up toward her. She was standing between two trees and, as I got a bit closer, she only moved ten or so feet further back.

The second image shows her Pooping! That is how bothered she was about our visit. After this point, we proceeded down the trail, past where she continued to leisurely wander around in this little wood.

This was all the excitement for the day: the new beaver wetland was frozen. No beavers were ever in sight like the previous visit.
