Red head

johngregsite Posted on 27-Aug-2015 by john27-Aug-2015

D81_1860z_150813_166zDuring our week in Mystic, we managed to catch a number of species. Here is a red-headed woodpecker which was on the big oak near the mailbox. The branch he is on is the massive one that hangs directly over the driveway at the entrance. When the big storm comes, this branch is going to take out the utility pole across the street and may even crush any cars at the former Mayo Smith’s driveway. Oh yeah, Anchor lane will be impassable until someone with a BIG saw shows up.

This photo has any quality to it due to significant digital manipulation since the bird was half in shadow and the photographer had an exposure priority setting which was inadequate for the scene. To illustrate how great the camera is, the original image is at right and the bird is in the center. I could crop out 95% of the image and still have enough data to manipulate into a pretty good image, I think.

A pair of jokers

D81_1658z_150805_160During the week before our visit to Mystic on vacation, I managed to meet these two pileated woodpeckers working on an old tree stump in the back yard.

This is a bucket list event: getting a picture of one of these woodpeckers has been a seemingly unattainable goal. Getting a picture of two has seemed impossible.
