Spring creep
Lessons in climate and geology at the end of the driveway; the terminal moraine, “a ridge-like accumulation of glacial debris pushed forward by the leading glacial snout and dumped at the outermost edge …,” of the 2012-2013 season is slowly melting and receding like a proper moraine should.
The glacier was, of course, Wally the snow-plow-man. For our driveway, the glacier cost $25 a visit. The grading of the driveway and associated tilling of the lawn are glacier-like results he doesn’t charge for.
The second image shows the corner of the bog at the Smithfield Plantation conservation property. This was our first visit for the year. This view shows a tree that lies horizontal partly due to a beaver having worked at the base. It remains to be discovered if the beavers are still around after reappearing last year.
The latest view of the beaver bog (third image) near the house shows less snow but it isn’t “ice out” yet.
