The Virginia in Maine

We briefly visited the Kennebec river in Bath, Maine, this week. Along the downtown river park, a replica of the oldest sea-going ship built in North America (if you ignore the possible construction of boats by the Norse or Vikings) rests at the museum dock. The Virginia was built by English almost colonists about 1607, at Popham at the mouth of the Kennebec on the Gulf of Maine, about 15 miles to the south.

We have posted of visits to this before but updates are always fun. The boat is awaiting permission from the Coast Guard to take visitors on tours.

Here are some views along the Madagascal stream in central Maine north of Bangor during the Memorial Day weekend last.

You will notice the number of beaver dens. They have historically populated this stream and have on-going dam work at miscellaneous spots up and down the waterway. Some don’t last and others are substantial enough to require a serious canoe portage if one wants to proceed beyond.
