More images from our cruise from Boothbay harbor, to the Sheepscot and Sasanoa river areas to the west, and return.
The Hendricks Head lighthouse is a well-known landmark at the mouth of the Sheepscot river and located on the west side of Southport Island. It is a private residence and has not been used for over a hundred years. Photos of the lighthouse when it was manned by the Coast Guard show the walkway fully covered and walled. The walkway goes to a small structure of which we are not sure of its function.
Townsend gut separates Southport Isl from the mainland (island is right, mainland left, and straight ahead you can see a part of Squirrel island). This is the southern end of the gut. At the other end is the highway bridge which is on-call for turning by any boat requiring it.
I have not figured out exactly where the next image is but the next river west of the Sheepscot is the Sasanoa river and the largest land area along the river is Westport island.

According to the History of Hendrick’s Lighthouse, a storm in January of 1978 demolished the boathouse and also destroyed the walkway that had connected the lighthouse to the fog bell tower. The odd building must be the bell tower.
If you look closely at the small building, there appears to be a large bell hanging out on the seaward side. It seems an elaborate structure for a relatively modest bell. Thanks for the update.
