April snow brings May flowers
This morning found snow on everything in central Maine; a light snowfall continues as we speak. Yard work is suspended and adventures into the forest require additional preparation. We have had a chance to explore and patrol the backwoods this week after work. In general, it is pretty quiet in the neighborhood. The nearly snowless winter does not appear to have changed the general pattern of natural things.
In a previously clear cut section of wood that we periodically visit, a large spruce or fir lies quietly on the cleared forest floor. This tree is a natural fall and apparently did not have value at the time of the last clear-cut (which probably was ten years ago, or so).
The last image of today is from a dense evergreen wood while you look out at the forest of deciduous trees in the woods just above the stream that eventually crosses the road near our house. Directly beyond the lies the clear-cut mentioned above and, if you had xray vision, you could see the fallen spruce portrayed in image-2.
