Beaver bog resident
Over at the edge of the beaver bog, we have been keeping track of this woodpecker nest. The hole was perfectly round about a week ago but, as you can see, it has been expanded into a rectangular shape. We identified it as a hairy woodpecker last week (the downy woodpecker looks similar; a difference is the length of the beak, with hairy woodpeckers having longer, slimmer beaks ). Looking at this juvenile makes us wonder about our initial identification.
