Call the ball!
The interesting little colony of gulls living around the small island supporting pilons of the Chesapeake Bay bridges provided this shot. Naval aviators landing on aircraft carriers are guided by humans called “LSOs” (Landing Systems Officers) and mechanical sensors and displays. One of these devices provide red/green/yellow round “ball” shapes indicating if the approaching aircraft is too high, too low, or just right on the glide path to landing. The LSO reminds the pilot to pay attention to the ball!
Here you see the LSO on the left, watching the approaching flight with great concern, and on the right, perhaps a young trainee, typically not paying attention to the lesson.
