The Zumwalt-class destroyer currently under construction at Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine, on the Kennebec river. This boat will be commissioned as the USS Lyndon Johnson in about a year. I have been told it will be based in San Diego.
According to our tour guide, the surface angle design and radar-absorbing surface tiles of the 600+ foot craft will result in a radar-signal image similar to a 40 foot ship.
Today I went on a cruise on the Kennebec river from Bath, Maine, to the river’s mouth on the Gulf of Maine, and return. We took the sight-seeing cruise boat of the Maine Maritime Museum between 10am and noon. At the dock, they have a living museum collection item, shown here: the “Mary E” – built here in Bath in 1906. I wish our cruise was on it, but it is available for trips and they sail it along the coast at events to represent the museum. More pictures coming ….
