back to the hundred acre woods

We have made it back to our corner of Maine woods after an exciting trip to Dixie. We will try to get back onto a regular reporting and update schedule. Our weather has stabilized and we expect to return to a more productive routine and lessen our lazy days.

The beaver pond, shown here, is at its highest and the season’s invasive algae is here in force. Our walks have been challenging in spots due to several large trees that have crashed down from our winter-spring storminess. Our month of March featured almost 10 inches of rain (4 inches is average). Wind was dramatic. We had more snow during the first weeks of April than all of March.

To the pond finally

Yesterday we made it to the pond for the first time since early January. We have tried several times but the snow depths have been just deep enough to make walking, even with crampon-attached boots, difficult. Ironically, the snow depths of three-to-six inches have been insufficient for snow-machiners, whose travels, in prior years, have packed down our local trails enough to allow dogs and people to traverse without snow-shoes. I have ventured out a couple times with snow-shoes but this mode of travel is not compatible with a healthy, assertive, eighty-pound K-9 escort.
