Old to new year weekend

image D81_8321_zOur annual visit to Mystic at year end / new year was COLD this year! The sun still sets over the Mystic River and Morgan Point in Noank on the last and first days of the year.

We have exclusive images of ice and bergs from the yacht club to the little beach. On our late afternoon walk to the little beach, we found plenty of sea ice at higher tide. The ice departs during low tide.

On one morning walk over to the yacht club, we got more views of ice covered shore lines. We did not venture over to Enders Island due to the cold and wind (Murphy would have gone but two-pairs of gloves couldn’t keep my hands warm). Looking east toward the east end of Fishers Island Sound and Latimer light revealed wispy sea smoke on the horizon. Ducks floated along the coastline here instead of their usual venue of the ice pond (it was frozen solid).

We did walk all the way to Mason Point at the end of Nauyaug Point road. Testing the ice at the ice pond causeway (so called) found it solid. Later we found two young men clearing snow off the center of the pond in preparation for ice skating (this was at the end of Ice Pond Lane).

How cold was it? A large group of mallards encamped under Thom’s outer bird feeder to eat seeds? acorns?

Christmas eve morning

johngregsite Posted on 24-Dec-2017 by john31-Mar-2018

img huntington hill rd xmsThe wild weekend began with six inches of snow Friday afternoon into evening. In the afternoon on Saturday it began to snow, then freezing rain, then rain. The temperature never went above freezing. The previously ice covered steps were scraped multiple times, sometimes removing ice accumulations, sometimes not.

As you can see here, today looks like a nice, at least partially, sunny day. Morning temp is 27f. This latest round of snow has put us into the snow-shoe zone. Last Tuesday, we did a little patrol by foot to the bog on a day off. The six inch snow depth was maximum for my boots.

The forecast is for nine to twelve inches of snow on Christmas day. The ice accumulations from yesterday are minimal, a quarter inch at most.
