Weekend at Tommy’s

johngregsite Posted on 18-Sep-2017 by john18-Sep-2017

image D7K_7600_zAfter arriving at Tom’s on Saturday, we have been amazed by the continuous visits by a group of hummingbirds. The birds not only visit the man-made feeders but also are feeding at the geraniums, dogwood fruit, and even nearby trees (they are attracted to red flowers but they also eat normal stuff, like spiders and bugs).

He has also continued to re-supply his other feeders, so the suburban bird population is growing strong here.

The addition of the bird bath has been a favorite of the sparrows.

There are even downy woodpeckers feeding at the hummingbird feeders. Titmouses, chickadees, cardinals, mourning doves, squirrels, etc. all visit.

The nuthatch does his upside down thing on the tree next to the south feeder

I have seen nuthatches on the nearby trees and I bet they even take snacks from the feeders.

At the neighbor’s house, a red-bellied woodpecker has been interested in the eaves.

The squirrels have not been venturing to the feeders so far, perhaps due to the continuous bird visits during the day. By the end of the day, the feeders are generally empty and there isn’t much left for the squirrels (he refills them in the morning).

We have more pictures of birds at the lake which we will publish soon.

Loons on the pond

johngregsite Posted on 4-Sep-2017 by john4-Sep-2017

image D81_7058_zWe went down to the pond on Monday evening thinking it would be quiet due to the holiday visitors leaving. Not so much. There were multitudes of boats, fast and slow, traveling around. Most interesting was finding six loons just off our wooded landing. This was the second time we have found so many here (usually we may find one or two, and that has been rare). The loons appeared to be unconcerned about the boat traffic.
