During last year’s Mystic visit (it would have been in January 2015, so it is really this year …), we encountered a small flock of ducks on Poggy Bay. These are red-breasted mergansers according to my research. They are a sea coast visitor during the winter months. Southeastern CT is within their typical range but I have never seen them before.

Brownish colored head are the females. They both sport red eyes.
