Among the host of wildlife hanging around the Mystic homestead are a couple very regular hummingbirds and the usual suburban contingent of squirrels. It took an hour or so sitting on the deck waiting for the hummingbirds to appear. They did periodically about thirty minutes apart and for only a half-a-minute at a time. Having some reading material was not beneficial for picture taking but made the time go faster. I ended up not reading after missing one visit.

The squirrels were mostly eating all the other bird feed on the ground by the other feeder and seemed to be somewhat disgusted the dude of the house had not put more bird feed out.

Birds and more

d81_151614e_023Along our walk today on the island, Thom showed me the nest of a heron in a tree over Nauyaug trail. The lighting was difficult but the subjects did not seem to care about our presence and did not move the entire time.

Later we were looking a one of the “tick” stations when a young deer suddenly popped his head up and stared at us.

Gray catbird

During our walk back past the pond, a catbird scolded us for no apparent reason.

Our visit to the osprey nest on Schoolhouse road yielded a reasonable documentary shot of the mother and a sibling. The sibling was seen flapping wings and could be ready to fly. The washed out presentation of the image is due to boosting exposure of a dark original.
