Birds along the driveway

johngregsite Posted on 10-Jul-2015 by john10-Jul-2015

D81_0998_150607_131Sitting on the front steps gives us opportunity to see a full range of birds. If we don’t see them, we hear them. Crows are typical, but pounding woodpeckers are not as common. When we hear light tapping, we begin looking around at our trees. Sometimes the pounding is like hammering; loud but far away: probably a pileated woodpecker. Last night, from the driveway during Murphy’s nightly walk, we hear loons screaming and giggling, and crooning in their weird sounding ways.

At left is a chipping sparrow looking for something along the ground.
D81_0996_150607_130Then, there are other (probably sparrows of a sort in this case, ) sitting on whatever they can find (see image at right). Maybe this is a nuthatch? It is too brown, I think.

He is sitting on an old sign post now used to mark the maple stump at the corner of the driveway so Wally doesn’t hit it with his snowplow.

Pre-July adventures

D81_1405_150702_140This is the far bog. We have not reached this spot in many months. Access from the back woods is made difficult in wet and rainy seasons since my neighbor ransacked the bridge over the creek we need to cross to get to it (he seeks to prevent the ATV machiniacs and generally, everyone, from riding or walking near his house). He has a tendency to get carried away. The old railway trail goes right by his place and it is the property line between his land and ours.

D81_1419_150702_139This nuthatch found some food on a trunk of a dead tree in the far bog. They will creep upside down along the tree, sideways and vertically, looking for food among the wood and bark. They are not woodpeckers but basic scavengers. I have another image of a white-breasted nuthatch at here.

This is my friend the red-wing blackbird (right) that I find at the bog at the Smithfield Plantation preserve.
