Eminent Mainers
Hansen Crockett Gregory is the only Gregory surname in Stover’s gem. He lived to 89 years from his birth in 1832; born in the quintessential Maine location of Clam Cove, now Glen Cove, located on Penobscot Bay just north of Rockland-ME. The cove is visible from US rt. 1 as you head north out of Rockland. A ship captain, he died at Sailor’s Snug Harbor, Staten Island, in 1921.
It has been suggested that he invented the doughnut in 1847. Allegedly a bronze plaque commemorating his invention was placed at his birthplace in 1947. [p. 227-228]
