Here is a typical cross-country “fence” at a horse trial, this particular obstacle is also known as a training-level oxer. We will have more examples from our exciting visit to northern Maryland.
Technically I think a typical cross country “fence” would be a single thing. An oxer is two fences placed so close that the horse does not land in between them. If two fences are placed far enough apart for the horse to take a stride in between them then the obstacle is an “in-and-out”
