In 1607, John Hunt and an adventurous group of English settlers established what is known as the Popham colony on the banks of the Kennebec river in what is now Phippsburg, Maine. The outpost lasted only a few years but did not suffer the same indignities as the Jamestown colony in Virginia. More information can be found here.
