We have had two broken tree limbs stuck into the ground in our front yard since the hurricane-for-insurance-purposes Irene went through. These limbs were high enough to accelerate and impact vertically with enough force to embed and stick a la the conclusion of a javelin throw. I do not know how many inches they are into the ground; we have left them untouched since the storm. I have even raked leaves around them.
