Major beaver at work
We found some significant beaver operations out at the conservation property. Some sizable trees are being felled; an impressive beaver den has appeared out in the bog.
The trees that have already been felled are stripped of their bark. They are eventually dragged away for use in dams; what is interesting about this beaver’s location is the apparent distance from any likely dam location. This is the northwestern corner of the bog, which links up with an open water pond out beyond the beaver’s den (to the left in the photo). This seems like a long way to the pond’s outlet where one would be placing a dam.
Most of the trees being impacted are birches: soft woods. This beaver operation has significantly surpassed the efforts of the beaver living across the road near our house which I have been monitoring on this blog.
