We found a red squirrel sitting quietly on a branch; he was not concerned as we approached closer and closer. After completing the shots and ambling away, he finally moved up the tree at an easy pace.

The piles of broken pine cones that liter the forest floor, one sample shown in image-2 here, indicate squirrels are well on their way on winter preparations.
