My favorite stump
This weekend’s images come from the forest primeval beyond the beaver bog; this is our favorite stump, at least until we find a better one. It competes with a long stone wall built many years ago, presumably when there were fields about instead of forests. The tree is probably ten to twelve feet in circumference, perhaps a four foot diameter. It is mostly hollowed out. It was discovered while taking an old logging trail off of the main trail to the south.
The other interesting discovery was this orange fungus growing out of the middle of the trail left by loggers. The plant growing next to it is an independent entity and not part of the fungus.
