Smithfield plantation walk through

johngregsite Posted on 24-Nov-2017 by john1-Apr-2018

Last weekend we went out to the Smithfield Plantation (former, original name of our town) conservation and recorded the fallen trees.

The downed trees in this part of our neighborhood are mostly oaks (nearer our house, the impacted trees are mostly evergreens).

This is an oak tree (above) from the Smithfield Plantation conservation. We found more oak trees down here as compared to the evergreens lying around near our house. It is also interesting that the typically weaker tree species (birch, beech, poplar, etc.) are not among the blow downs. Apparently, the stronger, tougher you are, the easier you fall?
