More images of the horned grebes on patrol on Poggy Bay; I mistakenly assumed they were red-breasted mergansers [see previous post]. My Audubon guide has since corrected my identification. I saw them diving for food, disappearing at one place and popping up yards away. They are wintering here (mergansers do the same) and head inland to fresh water lakes for the summer.
Birds in the neighborhood
While in Mystic last weekend, we found some birds of note. This great egret (left) was found at the ice pond both Saturday and Sunday.
We saw merganser ducks [4/16: not mergansers! I think they are horned grebes] on every trip down to the little beach. This one (below) looks a bit ragged and my identification is based on the red eyes; this is the best image I could get without a tripod since they stayed well out in the middle of Poggy Bay.
