They are horned grebes
More images of the horned grebes on patrol on Poggy Bay; I mistakenly assumed they were red-breasted mergansers [see previous post]. My Audubon guide has since corrected my identification. I saw them diving for food, disappearing at one place and popping up yards away. They are wintering here (mergansers do the same) and head inland to fresh water lakes for the summer.
