Snow fields

Some images from today’s hike through the backwoods using the snowmobile trail – which has seen no snowmobiles yet this year. This is a curious and strange development. Normally we would be walking on tamped down tracks – and constantly alert for the engine noise of an approaching machine. It is possible that the late freeze has prevented Woodbury Pond from freezing over; it is a crucial link on the snowmobile route.
Third week in January and nada for snowmobiles. Instead we found snowshoe tracks (not always mine), ski tracks, and boot tracks (I did boots today because there is just too little snow to require snowshoes – no blizzard of 2016 for us) and tons of animal tracks.
The second image here shows bridge Echo on the trail (underneath the yellow flags). Just beyond the trail are many, many tracks of turkeys crossing back and forth. I know these are turkey tracks because we met twenty or more minutes before I took this picture.
