Today, we went on a cruise out of Boothbay Harbor and our guide introduced us to a curiosity anchored in the harbor. Here you see an authentic ocean fishing trawler of allegedly Russian origin (to the left of the schooner).  The craft was apparently purchased by a Maine resident via auction or fire sale somewhere in the world. After attempting to refurbish it and running out of money five years ago, he has left it moored here since. The story continues: a second local purchaser has appeared and has resumed an effort to bring it back to mint? condition, if that is possible or the ultimate oxymoron (it looks to me exactly my mental image of a Russian fishing trawler now, how can it be enhanced?).

UPDATE: relentless interweb searching found the vessel, named the Westward, is not Russian but Dutch; the latest owner is from Mass. not Maine. There is some colorful history still associated with it. See
