Wild neighborhood
Today was an exciting day in the neighborhood; after waiting for almost thirty minutes, we caught this common flicker (there is a red chevron-like marking on the back of it’s head which suggests it is a yellow-shafted common flicker) poking at a perfectly round hole. Further research may find whether it is the bird’s home.
The turkey was found as shown, laying perfectly still not twenty feet from us as we went down a trail; the Bear smelled something but never did figure out what it was – I was tall enough to see this bird in the direction of Bear’s gaze. Since staying still like this is atypical of your basic wild turkey, we can only conclude it was sitting on a nest or is injured.
We have no idea what kind of butterfly this is in the third image.
Lastly, spring is progressing; the purple trilliums are sprouting everywhere.
