Beavers build new dam

johngregsite Posted on 8-Oct-2018 by john8-Oct-2018

On the east side of the beaver bog there is now a three foot high and maybe thirty feet long dam. It is maybe five feet or so wide with branches, tree trunks, and even dimension lumber from an old bridge. Mud is fastidiously inserted into every gap.

The dam has backed up water enough to make snow machine trail bridge Echo impassable without waders or a boat.

Earlier this year the bridge was under water for about two weeks but the water level returned to normal. I suspected possible beaver activity and wondered what may have happened. Then we had beavers build a dam downstream at Bridge Bravo near our house. The town road crew removed that dam a couple weeks ago. I suspect the dam at bridge Echo is their response.

A Rutan design aircraft passed overhead with a distinctive engine chatter (thanks Tommy for the ID)

At the little beach I spotted a small mocking bird (I think)

Looking out from the Money Point road right-of-way; note the rocks filled with cormorants – Fishers Isl shows on horizon

The hummingbirds were busy all weekend; or, at least one, and this bird stood on this branch for ten minutes or more with me five feet away
