Sunset on Lake Contoocook

We have a number of images from our weekend in Rindge. We can report that the weather was illogical. Saturday night reached a low near 35F, if not actually a real frost. The wind was strong and persistent for Friday to Sunday night. It was cold. A fire in the fireplace every night at the Woodbound Inn cabin. More images later this week.

Upper and lower bogs

Lower upper bog

This is a recent view of the upper bog which really is lower than the main beaver bog which I typically refer to as the “lower bog.” I suppose it could be referred to as the “lesser” bog, but that will only confuse me more.

The beavers who started all of this are long gone. They populated the back woods south of our property about twenty years ago and established a substantial (about two-acres or more) near-pond in what is the main bog or beaver bog. You have seen many pictures of the beaver bog over the years.

I counted seven different dams along the outlet stream between the main bog and the road by our house. One can see remnants of these structures if you get off the snowmachine trail and follow the stream.

The upper bog shown above has more tree trunks from the original forest than the main bog. This upper bog includes a branching creek from the west which the beavers did not get to dam. This is why (I guess) there are many more tree remnants here as compared to the areas where dams flooded the terrain.
