The hummingbird update

johngregsite Posted on 8-Aug-2015 by john8-Aug-2015

IMG_2208zOur search for Maine hummingbirds originated from the memory that we have had them around our flowers at various times in earlier years, and, after seeing hummingbirds at Brother Tom’s in Mystic earlier this year, we pulled out this feeder and have waited patiently for visitors. We have seen one hummingbird this year around our hostas. Over the past two weeks, the hummingbird has visited the feeder two or three times without getting any nectar. It appeared confused.

However, today it showed up twice and drank nectar for about fifteen seconds each time. Of course, my camera was elsewhere at the time.

Waiting for the hummingbirds

D81_1584_150801_153During the past weekend we planned to get some pictures of hummingbirds. We put out a hummingbird feeder and also had hostas in bloom. We have noticed that once the bees showed up around the hostas, the hummingbird may show up.

There was a fifteen second visit by the one local hummingbird that we know of and that was all. So, you get to see bees (see left) and butterflies (below) instead. The bees were around all day. The butterflies showed up briefly on Sunday.

Just to allow us some excitement, we saw a bee attacking the butterfly (see the third image, below); The bee is in front of the butterfly; you can just make out his rear end:
